The background should support the subject and not intrude upon it, especially in these large paintings. The success of a painting, for me, is when the viewer, including me, after it’s out of my sight for a few hours, first to see the figure, the main subject as a whole, and only then roam over every part of the painting. Because I work all over a painting during the three hours available to me, I do not have time to evaluate the whole through thinking, whether it’s working or not. It’s more intuitively letting colors and shapes quickly mingle or emerge, while having the main figure in my sight at all the times, until the whole looks good to me, or, I run out of time. Assuming it doesn’t get muddy or tired looking in the process. Sometimes, it seems, that, sometimes I tend to add activity to the background to give interest to the figure and at other times a particular and suitable flat color turns out to be the choice.
