Pink Camellia Bush 20"x20" Oil

Artist often say we need to know the subject we are trying to paint well in order to have a successful and meaningful painting. This may have some credence to a certain extent, in my opinion. But, if we are too familiar with the subject, as I am with my surroundings where we have been living for the last forty years, then chances are we tend to overlook its beauty and take it for granted. And, in some cases, simply ignore its presence in our lives. To counteract this, I, every once in awhile, have tried to train myself to look at the landscape around me as if I am seeing it for the first time.  This brings about the certain excitement and enthusiasm needed.  I often do this when I am driving around our Oregon landscape and see it with new eyes to appreciate its beauty.
