Years ago when I painted watercolors I was always on edge worrying that I would get blooms, that the washes are not transparent or graded beautifully, or overly grayed, but then I saw a book of Henry Miller’s watercolors, and what he said interested me—that he would have been happier to be a watercolor artist rather than a writer. And I felt the joy and freedom he got out of doing his carefree watercolors. And doing watercolor sketching became my pleasurable activity, and I stopped entering competitive watercolor exhibits.
